HOW THE BOOK CAME TO LIFE

STAGE ONE

First, Monika starts with a simple sketch, to represent Elaine ís words into images. It ís very messy, keeps it fun and easy to change if she finds a better way to show this scene.

STAGE TWO

Next, she draws the page in more detail and colours! Before, the characters didn’t look like anyone, but now they must be Charlie and his friends. Can you see if anything else changed in this scene?

STAGE THREE

Now you can clearly see what was missing in the previous scene. In this page, Elaine wanted the puppy to be partially lost in the bushes. So, Monika drew him right back in with plenty of trees around.

STAGE FOUR

Although it looks like Monika is taking a step back, this is a technical stage. You can now impress your parents and teachers with words like perspective, form and composition. Monika is making sure this scene makes you feel like you are there with Charlie.

STAGE FIVE

And finally, Monika paints and paints and paints until she feels like Charlie is jumping off the page right into her arms! She hopes you feel it too!
